The final saw Orlando Pirates end their six year trophy drought with a 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic, to capture the first piece of silverware available this season. Orlando Pirates started their campaign with a 1-0 win over Cape Town City, before humiliating neighbors Kaizer Chiefs 5-0 on aggregate in the semi-finals.

Since then, Pirates have struggled despite coming close to trophies, having finished second on the Absa Premiership table in back-to-back campaigns under then-coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojević in 2017/18 and 2018/19. Pirates fans stated “We are very very happy, it’s been long overdue, the players showed us the most fight since the days of Lucky Lekgwathi”
