PSL Supporters Criticise Owners Who Move Teams

When Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC purchased Bidvest Wits’ Premier Soccer League (PSL) status, the deal sent shockwaves through the entire league. Wits were on the brink of celebrating 100 years as a team, when the status sale officially moved the team to Thohoyandou Stadium in Limpopo, saw most of their players & staff leave the team, and left their supporters left wondering where it all went wrong. Recently, the same situation has taken place for Highlands Park, who have sold their status to TS Galaxy and moved to Mpumalanga. The moves have drawn criticism from supporters, who feel as though team owners don’t spare a thought for fans anymore.

In the latest episode of the SL Podcast’s “Fan Reaction Show”, supporters criticise the structure of status sales as a whole, with some saying that tactic doesn’t work for either party, as most teams who purchase status end up fighting relegation. Other supporters express an understanding for the business side of status, but call on the PSL to change one aspect of the rule, stating “If they are going to sell status to another team, it’s fine, but the team must remain in the same province at least”.
