“The Team Selection Was Poor”- Bafana Fans

Bafana Bafana earned a hard-fought 2-0 victory against São Tomé and Príncipe on Friday 13 November at the Moses Mabhida Stadium to move to six points in Group C of the AFCON Qualifiers, but their performance was cause for concern among supporters, who expected the national team to make easy work of their lowly opposition. Percy Tau & Bongani Zungu scored to secure the win for Bafana but Coach Molefi Ntseki came under fire after the match due to his team selection, which saw Rangers-star Zungu start the match on the bench, and Chiefs midfielder Lebogang Manyama play in a more advanced forward position.

In the latest episode of the SL Podcast’s “Fan Reaction Show”, supporters criticise Ntseki for his lack of faith in highly-rated Zungu, who showed flashes of brilliance after coming off the bench and secured the victory with an excellent second-half header. Questions were also raised about the choice of formation, lack of attacking threat and poor first-half display. After a little over a year which has also been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, there are already calls for the coach’s dismissal, and he’ll be hoping to solidify Bafana’s spot in the delayed Cameroon edition of AFCON sooner rather than later.
